Background of the Study
Phonological variation in digital media has become a prominent feature of online communication, especially on platforms like TikTok. This study assesses how Nigerian TikTok audio clips exhibit variations in pronunciation, intonation, and accent that reflect both traditional linguistic diversity and modern digital trends (Adebayo, 2023). TikTok’s short‑form video format encourages users to experiment with vocal expression, leading to creative phonetic adaptations that deviate from conventional norms. Users often exaggerate or modify their speech sounds to align with popular challenges, comedic content, or expressive storytelling. These phonological innovations are influenced by factors such as regional dialects, digital editing tools, and the platform’s rapid content sharing dynamics. By comparing various TikTok audio clips, the research aims to document the nature of phonological variation and analyze its impact on spoken language trends in Nigeria. This study contributes to our understanding of how digital media reshapes phonetics and provides insights into the interplay between technology and language evolution (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite TikTok’s popularity as a medium for creative vocal expression in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research on how its audio content drives phonological variation. The modifications in speech sounds, influenced by digital trends and editing techniques, are not well documented. This lack of systematic analysis hinders our understanding of the impact of digital media on traditional phonetic norms and the evolution of spoken language. Without comprehensive research, the mechanisms behind these phonological adaptations remain unclear, limiting theoretical and practical insights into language change in digital contexts (Ibrahim, 2023).
